Alfonzo Dennard’s potential probation violation could be worse than DUI

If Alfonzo Dennard is found to be in violation of his probation, he could do jail time.

USA TODAY Sports

Alfonzo Dennard could be in more trouble if a Nebraska court rules that he violated his probation when he was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to Pro Football Talk. Dennard was placed on probation last year for punching a police officer investigating a fight outside of a bar in Lincoln, Neb. His hearing will be held in front of judge on July 31.

If the judge finds that Dennard violated his probation, the New England Patriots cornerback could do jail time. Depending on the terms of his probation, Dennard could be in violation if there is sufficient evidence that he consumed alcohol, much less was driving with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit.

When Dennard was arrested, reports indicated that he refused to submit to a field sobriety test. Since, Dennard has maintained that he blew under the legal BAC limit twice on a breathalyzer, but was told by a police officer that he did not blow hard enough.

The judge could give Dennard a second chance even if he is found to be in violation of his probation. Unfortunately for Dennard, he will have to go to court six days into training camp, unless his attorney is able to get the date moved. The Patriots released a statement saying they were "extremely disappointed" to learn of the arrest. Dennard fell to the Pats in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
