Denver Broncos announce suspensions for team executives

Matt Russell and Tom Heckert were suspended following recent arrests for suspicion of drunken driving.

USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos suspended Matt Russell and Tom Heckert on Monday after both executives were recently arrested for suspicion of drunken driving. Russell was suspended indefinitely without pay while Heckert was suspended for one month without pay.

The Broncos will provide confidential treatment for Heckert and Russell and both will be evaluated before returning to the organization. Denver Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway called the arrests “unacceptable and inexcusable.”

Russell, Denver’s director of player personnel, was arrested on July 7 when he allegedly hit a police car and was subsequently charged with an open container of alcohol, failure to display proof of insurance and careless driving resulting in injury. Mile High Report speculated Russell received a harsher suspension because of the severity of his incident and the fact it occurred after Heckert’s.

Heckert was hired as the Broncos' director of pro personnel in May. He was arrested on June 17 and charged with DUI and careless driving. While his suspension is less severe, it may have far reaching ramifications. Heckert was fired by the Browns following last season and according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Heckert's suspension could mean Cleveland doesn't have to make the payments it owes him as part of his previous contract.

The Broncos told the NFL league office of its plan and were told the league had no plans to impose additional discipline.
