Morgan Burnett, Packers agree to extension

The Packers locked up a key piece of their defense on Monday, signing Morgan Burnett to an extension.

The Green Bay Packers agreed to a four-year extension with safety Morgan Burnett on Monday, securing another key piece of the roster for the long term. The deal, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, is worth $24.75 million with $8.25 million guaranteed.

A former third-round pick, Burnett took over as a full-time starter in 2011 and has been a tackling machine since. He racked up 107 total tackles in 2011 and led all safeties last season with 123 total tackles. The 24-year-old was entering the final season of his rookie contract and would have been an unrestricted free agent during the next offseason.

Burnett's deal is in line with the deals other young safeties have signed recently. Seattle's Kam Chancellor signed a five-year deal worth $29.325 million earlier this offseason. Tyvon Branch signed a four-year deal worth $26.6 million last offseason.

By signing Burnett, the Packers have now extended three key pieces of their future this offseason. Green Bay agreed to extensions with Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers in April.
