Michael Vick not assured to start at quarterback

Many think Michael Vick will ultimately win the Eagles’ starting quarterback job, but it’s a legitimate competition and Nick Foles -- not Vick -- may be in the lead.

When Chip Kelly was hired by the Eagles, many immediately began projecting Michael Vick in Kelly's spread offense. The problem with that is Vick is far from a lock to start at quarterback. Instead, not only is Vick in a competition with Nick Foles and others for the starting job, but he may be trailing.

More Eagles: Bleeding Green Nation

According to Jimmy Kempski of SB Nation and The Morning Call, the Eagles’ quarterback competition is legitimate and after a strong showing in offseason workouts, Foles is currently ahead of Vick.

The important thing to note there is that we’re in “Mile 1” of a marathon. At some point, could Michael Vick just begin to pull away from the rest of the pack because he’s so talented? Absolutely. But for now, this competition is very real, and Foles is in the lead.

Now, leading the quarterback competition before training camp doesn't mean very much. Russell Wilson opened last season a distant third on the depth chart heading into training camp -- and he won the job. However, Vick does have some ground to make up. According to Kempski, Foles was quicker to deliver the ball and more accurate than Vick in OTAs. If that continues, it could be Foles and not Vick opening the season as the starter, despite the proclamation NFL Network's Jamie Dukes made recently.

As for Matt Barkley. Kempski came away from OTAs impressed by the rookie, but said Barkley will have a lot of ground to make up if he's going to join Foles and Vick in the competition to start. The Eagles open training camp on July 25.
