Bengals likely to move on from Michael Johnson after 2013

Despite breaking out in 2012, Michael Johnson could be squeezed out of Cincinnati after failing to sign a long-term deal on Monday.

Defensive end Michael Johnson's future with the Cincinnati Bengals is in doubt after the 2013 season, and the Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy is convinced this year will be his last with the team.

The deadline to sign Johnson to a long-term deal passed at 4 p.m. ET on Monday, and the two sides could not come to an agreement beyond the franchise tender that will pay Johnson over $11 million this year. The Bengals’ final offer was reportedly $40 million over five years, but Johnson turned it down.

The team did sign fellow defensive end Carlos Dunlap to a contract extension, however, locking in the young pass rusher to a six-year deal worth up to $40 million. With Dunlap in the fold and Johnson playing on a one-year deal, it would seem that the Bengals have prioritized keeping Dunlap and defensive tackle Geno Atkins, who had 12.5 sacks and four forced fumbles in 2012.

If Johnson does move on in 2014, he should have plenty of suitors. The fifth-year pro out of Georgia Tech really blossomed in 2012, collecting a career-high 11.5 sacks and 52 total tackles while starting 15 games. Some teams may be scared of investing long-term, thinking he’s a one-year wonder, but someone will be willing to give him money in the free agent market.
