Randall Cobb works to become complete wide receiver

Randall Cobb doesn’t want to be pigeonholed as a slot receiver. He wants to do more work on the outside and become a more all-around receiver.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb has established himself as one of the best slot receivers and special teams returners in the game. However, he wants to do much more in the offense than those limited roles, and has been working on outside routes in the offseason.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Cobb bristled at the “slot receiver” label and wants to be known as a more complete offensive weapon:

“I don’t want to work on just being a slot receiver,” Cobb said. “I want to be a receiver, period. I want to be able to go outside, too. So one thing I’ve worked on this off-season, too, is my outside routes and trying to put that into my game so I’m not just labeled a ‘slot guy.’”

Cobb recorded 80 receptions for 954 yards and eight touchdowns last season as the main slot guy. With Greg Jennings now playing in Minnesota, he has a chance to rotate outside positions with either Jordy Nelson or James Jones.

The Journal Sentinel also suggests that the Packers may take Cobb off special teams, where he racked up 1,256 return yards and a touchdown last year. If the Packers stop using Cobb on returns, Jeremy Ross may take over the role despite a critical muffed punt in the playoffs.
