Matt Elam contract: Ravens’ 1st-round pick agrees to four-year deal

The rookie safety becomes the last of Baltimore’s 2013 draft class to reach a deal.

USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Ravens and first-round draft pick Matt Elam have agreed in principle to a four-year contract, making him the last of Baltimore's 2013 draft class to reach a deal. The contract is reportedly worth $6.7 million and includes a $3.3 million signing bonus, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.

Having never signed an agent, the safety prospect actually negotiated his own deal, which he is expected to sign at the beginning of Baltimore’s training camp on July 21.

The late signing has not kept Elam from participating in his new team's preparation for the upcoming season, however. The University of Florida product and 32nd-overall pick of the NFL Draft was present for the Ravens' entire minicamp program, where he left the coaching staff with quite an impression.

“Matt Elam is what we expected and maybe a little bit more,” assistant Teryl Austin crooned of the safety during offseason workouts, via BaltimoreRavens.com. “[He’s] going through the usual changes that a rookie goes through, but he’s smart. He’s tough, he’s fast, he gets football, and I think he is going to be a fine player for us soon.”

An All-American at Florida, Elam led the team with 58 tackles and four interceptions during his senior campaign in Gainesville.

He will compete against Michael Huff and James Ihedigbo for one of the two starting safety spots for the Ravens, who will be looking to replace the legendary Ed Reed at the position.
