Josh Freeman is Bucs starting QB, according to Greg Schiano

Despite drafting a quarterback in the third round, Greg Schiano said there won’t be a quarterback competition in Bucs training camp.

USA TODAY Sports

Josh Freeman's long-term future in Tampa Bay is still uncertain considering he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2013 season. His role in 2013 is clear, thought, because Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said Monday that Freeman is his team's starting quarterback.

"I believe in competition and Mike Glennon is going to be a tremendous quarterback in his time," Schiano said during an appearance on NFL Network. "But we have a quarterback, it's Josh Freeman. He had a really good spring. I think it's really coming together, being in this system for a second year now and hearing the things over again after being able to study it. I'm really encouraged."

Schiano's comments on Monday came just a few months after reports surfaced that he was the only person not onboard with Freeman as the team's starting quarterback. The head coach suggested the team would have a quarterback competition heading into this year and Tampa Bay drafted Glennon in the third round of the NFL Draft, but Freeman has apparently secured his spot.

While Freeman won’t have to battle for the starting job in training camp, he still has a lot to prove next season. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the 25-year-old could be in line for a lucrative long-term deal if he plays well next season. If he struggles, though, Tampa Bay may let him walk in free agency.
