Michael Crabtree injury: 49ers WR begins rehab

The 49ers receiver returned to working out on Monday, although specifics were not revealed.

About six weeks removed from surgery in May to repair a torn Achilles tendon, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree has begun workouts as he continues to rehab the injury. Crabtree tweeted on Sunday that he was to return to working out on Monday:

David Fucillo of Niners Nation believes that the return to the training facility is likely more upper body work given previous tweets by Crabtree that indicated he was still some ways away from being able to return to walking. On Tuesday, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee spoke with Dr. Eric Giza about the ideal timeline for Crabtree’s recovery.

Four to six weeks: Patient starts to put weight on the foot. For an elite athlete like Crabtree, this can start at four weeks and usually begins in a pool. At six- to eight weeks, patients might begin working on a stationary bike or an elliptical machine to maintain their fitness.

Crabtree, 25, had a career-best year in 2012 as he accumulated 85 receptions for 1,105 yards and nine touchdowns for the 49ers. The former-first round pick suffered the injury during the team’s organized team activities in May and had surgery to repair the injury immediately after.

In four NFL seasons, Crabtree has 3,345 yards receiving with 21 touchdown grabs.
