Cowboys’ Anthony Spencer may need surgery

Training camp didn’t get off to a good start for the Cowboys as defensive end Anthony Spencer may need knee surgery.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer aggravated a bone bruise in his left knee and the injury could require surgery, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas.

Spencer began experiencing pain in the knee during conditioning drills on Saturday. He underwent an MRI on Sunday, which revealed a bone bruise. While a recovery plan hasn’t been decided, surgery remains an option and would keep Spencer out of camp for 2-3 weeks, according to Watkins.

“It’s concerning to me,” Spencer said, via ESPN.com. “It’s bothering me right now. I really don’t know what else to do, so I’m taking it day by day.”

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said the team didn’t think the injury was severe and the organization would come up with a plan moving forward in the next few days. If the injury does require surgery, Spencer would miss the majority of training camp, but should be able to return before the start of the regular season. He’s transitioning from linebacker to defensive end in Dallas’ new 4-3 scheme and the injury will only hinder that process.

The injury, even if not serious, is a cause of concern for the Cowboys, who lost backup defensive end Tyrone Crawford for the season when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon on Sunday. Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff is also sitting out practice as he's currently on the active/physically unable to perform list due to a strained hamstring.
