Travelle Wharton visits Carolina Panthers

After getting released by the Bengals, Travelle Wharton is visiting with the Panthers, the team he played with for eight seasons.

Offensive lineman Travelle Wharton is visiting with the Carolina Panthers, according to ESPN's Pat Yasinskas. He previously spent eight seasons playing for the team.

Wharton was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday after just one season with the team. He left the Panthers to join Cincinnati in 2012, but tore his ACL in preseason and missed the entire season. He was unable to work out in spring OTAs and the Bengals cut ties with him shortly before training camp begins.

Wharton played for the Panthers from 2004-11, starting 99 games at both offensive tackle and guard. His familiarity with the team and close ties to former teammates could help him get re-signed. Panthers blog Cat Scratch Reader believes that Wharton would provide some much-needed depth to the offensive line:

While his injury recovery is cause for concern, it's important to understand how dire the Panthers situation at right guard is. Edmund Kugbila has promise, but is too raw to be relied on, while Geoff Hangartner struggled throughout the 2012 season.

Depending on today's meeting we could see a new one-year veteran as early as this afternoon, which would greatly bolster the Panthers' offense in 2013 -- and more importantly, help Cam Newton.
