Anthony Spencer injury: Cowboys DL likely out 2-4 weeks after knee surgery

Anthony Spencer will undergo knee surgery and will miss the majority of training camp.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Anthony Spencer will undergo knee surgery and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. This will keep him out for most of training camp.

Spencer sat out of pre-conditioning drills in training camp with a knee injury. He’s been dealing with the injury since OTAs and finally decided to go under the knife during camp. He was given the franchise tag in the offseason and will play under a one-year deal worth $10.6 million. The Cowboys attempted to sign him to a long-term deal, but weren’t able to get anything done before the July 15 deadline. He recorded 11 sacks, 95 tackles and two forced fumbles last season.

If the surgery goes well, Spencer should be ready in time for the regular season, but his absence is a major blow to the Cowboys’ training camp depth. The Cowboys already lost Tyrone Crawford for the season with a torn Achilles on the first day of practice. Monte Kiffin’s transition to the 4-3 defense isn’t getting off on the right foot so far.
