Training camp is underway across the NFL, but several big names will be forced to sit due to injuries. Players placed on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) can be activated by teams at any time during the preseason, however, so the designation is really just a good way for teams to add an extra player to the roster while another player recovers. Players on the PUP list to open the regular season must sit out their team’s first six games.
2013 NFL training camp injuries: Every team’s PUP list situation so far
With training camps starting up, names are flying on off injury lists. Check out who has been designated on PUP and NFI lists so far.

Players can also be placed on the non-football injury list (NFI) during training camp. The designation doesn’t differ much from the PUP list, except to note players who suffered their ailments outside of NFL practices or games. Incoming rookies who are still recovering from college football injuries frequently appear on the NFI list.
Below are the known players who currently reside on PUP or NFI lists entering training camp. The list may not be comprehensive, however, so be sure to let us know in the comments if there is anyone we missed.
Kapron Lewis-Moore (Knee), DE - NFI
The Ravens’ 2013 sixth-round pick is still dealing with a torn ACL suffered during the BCS National Championship Game against Alabama.
Marshal Yanda (Knee), G - PUP
Yanda is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but head coach John Harbaugh expects the lineman back in camp at some point.
Jameel McClain (Back), ILB- PUP
McClain suffered a spinal contusion last December, but was able to do individual work during offseason training activities.
Jacoby Jones (Conditioning), WR - NFI
Jones reportedly failed his conditioning test before the start of Ravens training camp.
Chris Hairston (Lower Body), OT - PUP
Hairston, who is competing for the Bills’ starting right tackle position, is still recovering from offseason surgery. There is no word yet when he might return.
Lamont Bryant, WR, (Hamstring) - NFI
Bryant was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2012 NFL Draft.
David Nelson, WR, (Knee) - PUP
Nelson’s inclusion on the PUP list came as somewhat of surprise, according to Browns blog Dawgs By Nature. Last month, he stated he would be ready by training camp.
Chris Faulk, OT, (Knee) - PUP
Faulk’s inclusion is less surprising.
Jay Ratliff (Hamstring), DT - PUP
Ratliff suffered a hamstring injury at the start of camp, and immediately landed on the PUP list.
Mackenzy Bernadeau (Hamstring), G - PUP
Like Ratliff, Bernadeau suffered a hamstring injury when camp began.
Sam Montgomery (Unknown), LB - NFI
Montgomery’s ailment has yet to be reported, though there are rumors that he showed up to camp out of shape.
Justin Blackmon (Groin), WR - PUP
Blackmon is still recovering from offseason groin surgery, though he is reportedly progressing nicely.
Johnathan Cyprien (Hamstring), S - PUP
Cyprien suffered a hamstring injury earlier in July, but the injury is not considered serious, per Big Cat Country.
Stephane Milhim (Foot), G - PUP
Taylor Price (Foot) - PUP
Rob Gronkowski (Back/Forearm) - PUP
Gronkowski’s constant in-and-out of the surgery room has been well-documented, so it’s no surprised he opens camp on the PUP list. There is currently no timetable for his return.
Julian Edelman (Foot), WR - PUP
Edelman broke his foot in May, and is reportedly still trying to make a comeback.
Kenny Stills (Unknown), WR - NFI
At the moment, it is still unclear what exactly is ailing Stills. He is expected to compete for the Saints' No. 3 receiver spot with Joseph Morgan and Nick Toon.
Heath Miller (Knee), TE - PUP
Miller badly hurt his knee last December, and Steelers blog Behind The Steel Curtain suggests that the tight end could open the regular season on the PUP list, keeping him out for six games.
Kyle Williams (Knee), WR - PUP
Don’t expect Williams to stay on the PUP list for long. The wide receiver tweeted earlier this month that he is ready to play.
Darius Fleming (Knee), LB - PUP
Fleming is dealing with a knee tweak, which is concerning because he is coming off a torn ACL.
Marcus Lattimore (Knee), RB - NFI
Lattimore’s absence from training camp shouldn’t surprise anyone who saw his knee injury against Tennessee last season. He will be hard pressed to see playing time this year.
Quinton Dial (Toes), DE - NFI
Dial is one of four 49ers rookies placed on the NFI list. He is expected to be activated before the end of training camp, however.
Cornellius Carradine (Knee), DE - NFI
Like Dial, Carradine is expected to be active at some point during training camp.
Mario Manningham (Knee), WR - PUP
Mannningham is dealing with torn knee ligaments, and according to 49ers blog Niners Nation, it would not be surprising if he is still on the PUP list to open the season.
Kendall Hunter (Achilles), RB - PUP
Hunter has indicated that he is healthy, and could be activated in short order.
Lance Kendricks (Knee), TE - PUP
Kendricks continues to work his way back from a knee injury, but there does not appear to be a timetable for his return just yet.
Matt Daniels (Knee), S - PUP
Daniels is also dealing with a knee injury with no announced timetable.
Jermelle Cudjo (Foot), DT - PUP
Cudjo’s prognosis is similar to Kendricks’ and Daniels, only he is dealing with a foot injury.
Barrett Jones (Foot), OL - NFI
Jones should be able to return soon for the Rams. Head coach Jeff Fisher said that the lineman could be back within two weeks.
Adam Carriker (Quadriceps), DE - PUP
Carriker has been expected to start camp on the PUP list since June. He appeared in just two games last season.
