Buccaneers sign Peyton Hillis, per report

Tampa Bay added some running back depth on Tuesday, signing the veteran Hillis.

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Peyton Hillis was scheduled to workout for Tampa Bay on Tuesday and apparently the workout went well because the Buccaneers signed him to a one-year deal, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Hillis will give the Buccaneers some more depth behind starter Doug Martin. He'll likely compete with Brian Leonard and others for the role the since traded LeGarrette Blount filled last season. Hillis signed for the veteran minimum, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, and will still have to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

Two years removed from his breakout season with the Cleveland Browns in 2010 that landed him on the cover of the Madden video game franchise, Hillis will join his third team in three years. He spent last season in Kansas City backing up Jamaal Charles after two seasons in Cleveland before that. When healthy, he can be a solid option out of the backfield, as he showed in 2010 when he rushed for 1,177 yards.

Injuries have slowed him since and he finished with just 309 yards and a touchdown while averaging 3.6 yards per attempt last season in Kansas City.
