Perhaps looking to upgrade a defense that will be without linebacker Daryl Washington for the first four weeks of the season, the Arizona Cardinals have set up a visit with former Jets and Falcons defensive end John Abraham. Released in March only one year after signing a three-year contract with Atlanta, Abraham is still seeking work as NFL teams approach training camp and the preseason.

Abraham, the Falcons all-time leader in sacks, had 37 tackles and 10 sacks with Atlanta last season. It was his seventh-career season with double-digit sacks for the four-time Pro Bowler. But now 35-years-old and maybe a step slower than he used to be, the Falcons released Abraham to cut costs and continue a youth movement that also saw them part ways with cornerback Dunta Robinson and running back Michael Turner.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals were led in sacks last season by Washington with 9.5. Second was defensive end Calais Campbell with just 6.5, and Arizona will be hoping to get more pass-rushing production than that under new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.
The report on Wednesday morning from AZCardinals.com is that Abraham would likely be worked into a role as a rotational outside linebacker, and that the Cardinals have $10.6 million in cap space with first-round pick Jonathan Cooper still unsigned.
