Eric Winston contract: OT, Cardinals reportedly reach 1-year deal

The Arizona Cardinals and the seven-year vet have agreed in principal to a deal for the 2013 season.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The Arizona Cardinals and free agent offensive tackle Eric Winston have reached an agreement on a one-year contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rumors of an impending deal heated up on Wednesday, and it appears the two sides are close to making it official, though details of the financial terms are forthcoming.

Winston spent the 2012 season in Kansas City, where he started all 16 games for the Chiefs at right tackle. The lineman has been consistent during his six-year NFL career, not missing a single game since entering the league in 2007. He spent five seasons with the Houston Texans before moving on to Kansas City.

The move comes as an attempt to protect the Cardinals' new quarterback, Carson Palmer. The team's offensive line struggled mightily last season, allowing 58 sacks, and ownership clearly feels a need to bolster the line in front of their new investment. Winston will be expected to immediately push current starting tackles Levi Brown and Bobby Massie for playing time, and don't be surprised to see Winston starting in either one's stead come Week 1.
