Matt Ryan contract: Falcons QB agrees to extension worth over $100 million

Reports have Ryan signing one of the largest contracts in the league. Find out the full details and where it places him in the pantheon of quarterback contracts.

USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan agreed to a five-year extension, the team announced Thursday afternoon. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported the deal worth more than $100 million. Ian Rapoport reports that the contract is a five-year deal worth $103.75 million with $59 million guaranteed.

Peyton Manning's contract has a $58 million guarantee, and Drew Brees' $60.5 million guarantee is the largest in the NFL. That would make Ryan's guaranteed money the second-largest in the league.

Ryan was scheduled to make $12 million this season, the last year of his rookie contract that was for six years and guaranteed him $34.75 million. The Falcons have been more than satisfied with Ryan’s production over his five years in the NFL. He is a two-time Pro Bowler with a career record of 56-22, missing only two games back in 2009.

The Falcons have never had a losing season since drafting Ryan third overall in 2008. His 68.6 completion percentage last season led the NFL, and he had career-highs in yards (4,719) and touchdowns (32) while leading the Falcons to an NFC-best 13-3 record.

Earlier this year, Aaron Rodgers received a new $130.75 million deal from the Packers, Tony Romo got $119.5 million from the Cowboys, Matthew Stafford got $76.5 million from the Lions, and Tom Brady received a five-year, $57 million contract from the Patriots. Free agent Joe Flacco signed a new $120.6 million deal with the Ravens.

If reports of the Ryan deal being worth over $100 million are accurate, he would be the seventh active QB in the NFL to be on a contract worth over $100 million.
