Cardinals sign John Abraham to 2-year deal, per report

The Cardinals signed John Abraham on Thursday to boost the team’s pass rush.

US PRESSWIRE

The Arizona Cardinals signed John Abraham to a two-year contract on Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, ending a long offseason for the defensive end that began when he was released by the Atlanta Falcons in early March.

Coming off a 10-sack season in Atlanta, Abraham seemed to be in high demand. The 35-year-old visited the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans, but all were reportedly turned off by Abraham's contractual demands. Talks went far with the Titans, but stalled in early June with money once again an issue.

The finances of Abraham's two-year deal in Arizona have yet to be confirmed, though Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports that the deal could be worth a total of $6 million. If that's the case, Abraham's contract is a chunk less than the two-year, $8.75 million deal that Dwight Freeney received from the San Diego Chargers. The Freeney deal appeared to be part of the reason why Abraham's negotiations with the Titans crumbled.

Despite his veteran status, Abraham proved last season that he is still an effective pass rusher. The Cardinals have not yet revealed what role Abraham will have next season, though Cardinals blog Revenge Of The Birds suggests that he will be used as a situational pass rusher at outside linebacker.
