Santonio Holmes and Joe McKnight placed on injured lists for Jets

The New York Jets won’t have their full complement of weapons to start training camp.

The biggest story out of New York Jets training camp will be the quarterback battle between Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith, but the team has other concerns on offense: Wide receiver Santonio Holmes will be placed on the physically unable to perform list, and running back Joe McKnight failed his physical.

Holmes is recovering from surgery on his foot, so his placement on the PUP was expected -- however, there are concerns that he won't be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, according to ESPN New York. The Jets elected to sign Braylon Edwards on Thursday to add another weapon in training camp, but he wants to push for a starting job. Edwards had one of his best seasons with the Jets in 2010, when he finished the season with more than 900 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

Meanwhile, McKnight had an opportunity to position himself as one of the team's primary running backs this year, as he was scheduled to battle with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell while Mike Goodson is away from camp dealing with personal issues. Instead, he failed a pre-camp physical Thursday and will be placed on the team's 'non-football injury' list, where he can be activated at any time provided he can pass the organization's tests.

The seldom-used McKnight had impressive flashes in 2012, carrying the ball for an average of 6 yards. Until he's ready to return from injury, the team will need to lean on Ivory and Powell to carry the load after Shonn Greene left for the Tennessee Titans via free agency.
