Seahawks claim O’Brien Schofield

The Seahawks added another pass rusher to their stable on Saturday, claiming former Cardinal O’Brien Schofield.

After being released by the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, O'Brien Schofield won't have to leave the NFC West as he was claimed by the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday. Schofield's agent, Blake Baratz, broke the news on Twitter.

Schofield spent four seasons in Arizona after being selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He was a dominant pass rusher during his career at Wisconsin, but has 10.5 sacks in 35 career NFL games. The 26-year-old will likely compete for a spot on Seattle's roster as a LEO, Seattle's pass-rushing defensive end.

He will have an uphill battle to make the roster as Seattle is loaded with pass rushers. The Seahawks signed Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril this offseason. Starting LEO Chris Clemons is recovering from knee surgery and may not be ready for the start of the season. Bruce Irvin backed up Clemons last season, but is suspended for the first four games of 2013. He's also potentially on the move, with news that Irvin may play outside linebacker this season.

If Schofield is able to make the roster, he will get the opportunity to play his former team twice a year. The Cardinals released Schofield after signing John Abraham, but Alex Mann of Revenge of the Birds wrote Arizona may regret cutting Schofield who could be in line for a breakout season.
