Jonathan Cooper signs with Cardinals, reports to training camp

With Cooper’s signing, only two rookies remain unsigned.

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals have signed first-round pick Jonathan Cooper to a four-year contract, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The contract guarantees $14.55 million for the No. 7 overall pick. Cooper gets the bulk of his guaranteed money now, more in September and the final installment in October.

The former North Carolina guard will now report to training camp, leaving just two rookies -- Jets cornerback Dee Milliner and Titans guard Chance Warmack -- holding out.

NFL teams are continuing to fight for offset language in rookie contracts, which makes it easier for teams to release players without as much consequence in the final years of their rookie deals. In exchange, agents have been wanting more money up front in contracts for first-year players.

Cooper got that, with all of his guaranteed money coming by October. Most rookies will be waiting until next March to receive the rest of their guarantees.

The new collective bargaining agreement has reduced the number of rookie holdouts, but minor snags in negotiations are still keeping some first-year players out of camp.
