Matt Flynn steady, Tyler Wilson struggling for Raiders

If Tyler Wilson is going to unseat Matt Flynn as starting quarterback, he’s going to have some ground to make up.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Flynn opened training camp with a loose grip on the Raiders' starting quarterback job after shaky offseason workouts. That grip, however, has reportedly gotten stronger a few practices into camp, according to Jerry McDonald of Inside Bay Area.

Flynn was erratic at times during offseason workouts and those struggles led some to believe rookie Tyler Wilson had a legitimate shot to beat Flynn out for the starting job. Levi Damien on Silver and Black Pride said some of Flynn's passes during OTAs were "wobbly" while Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said the quarterbacks weren't as mentally sharp as they needed to be.

Flynn has been much better in training camp, according to McDonald, who said the former Seattle and Green Bay QB has been consistent and error-free. Flynn doesn’t have the strongest arm in the league and McDonald said Flynn appears to “understand his limitations” in the Raiders offense.

While Flynn has done nothing to lose hold of the starting job, Wilson has done nothing to take it either. According to McDonald, Wilson has had "some rough moments" during the early stages of camp. Instead of battling for the starting job, Wilson may need to improve if he's going to claim the backup job. McDonald said Terrelle Pryor has improved as a passer and could be a "viable option" if Flynn was injured.

The early indications are positive for Flynn, but it is still very early in training camp. Flynn appeared in line to open the season as Seattle's starter last season before losing the job to Russell Wilson following the third preseason game.
