Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin only Packers RB’s ‘locked’ into roster spots

Green Bay has some open spots on the roster at running back, a position which has been unsettled for years.

USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers will have a very different look this season at the running back position. After having Cedric Benson lead the way out of the backfield in 2012, the Packers have brought in new blood with second-round pick Eddie Lacy and fourth rounder Johnathan Franklin.

Both are considered to be locks on the roster, with a third and potential fourth spot on the depth chart completely up for grabs, according to the team website.

With Benson gone, one player hoping to snag a spot is last season's starter Alex Green, who took over after Benson was lost for the year in October. Green rushed for 464 yards to lead Green Bay.

Green knows the battle for a roster slot will be fierce. Per the piece:

“It’s going to be very competitive,” Green said of the upcoming training camp. “Every back on the roster is capable of being a contributor to the offense, from the drafted to free agents. It’s going to be good for everybody. It’s going to push everybody in the backfield to get better.”

Other running backs that will be thrown into the mix by head coach Mike McCarthy are Angelo Pease, DuJuan Harris and James Starks. Starks had a terrific postseason in 2010 in his rookie campaign, but has never been able to duplicate his success.
