Paul Soliai contract: Dolphins not talking extension yet

Miami is waiting on a contract extension thanks to healthy competition on the defensive line.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Miami Dolphins and nose tackle Paul Soliai haven't had any talks about a long-term deal, according to the Miami Herald.

It's believed the Dolphins want to wait and see who plays better out of defensive linemen Randy Starks and Soliai, and then offer a large deal to the winner of the competition. Currently, Starks is playing on the franchise tag and making $8.45 million. Not a bad consolation prize.

Last season, Soliai registered 29 tackles and 1.5 sacks while anchoring the Dolphins run defense which ranked 13th in the NFL, giving up 108.4 yards per game. The 340-pound lineman had his finest campaign in 2010, racking up 39 tackles and a pair of sacks, both career highs.

Considering the free agent frenzy Miami went on in the offseason, it might want to wait and see how well the team plays before shelling out any additional money. Should they rise to meet expectations and Soliai plays as he has been, he’s likely in line for a nicer paycheck.
