Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has acknowledged that there is a new urgency with the team. He also admits that his seat is hot after a disappointing season, although he hopes that it will cool down.

Martin Mayhew acknowledged to the press that the Lions are facing an urgent season after their dismal 4-12 campaign last season.

Mayhew took over as GM during the Lions’ infamous 2008 season, tasked with cleaning up the mess Matt Millen left behind. The team saw steady progress under his watch, getting back to the playoffs in 2011, but it took a major step backwards in 2012, finishing 4-12 amid off-field troubles and poor locker room chemistry.

Mayhew is determined to move on and focus on 2013, but he does believe that the heat is on both him and coach Jim Schwartz. From the Detroit News:
“This is the NFL - the urgency is there every single year,” he said. “You talk about hot seats; there are 32 hot seats for every general manager, every head coach. There’s an expectation in this league of perfection. People aren’t perfect. There’s a high expectation, a high urgency level.”
I am certainly going to work as hard as I can to keep my seat cool.”
The Lions took steps to improve locker room relations, releasing perpetual headache Titus Young and signing respected veterans Reggie Bush, Glover Quin, Jason Jones and Israel Idonije. They turned to the draft to add young defensive talent, drafting Ziggy Ansah and Darius Slay with their first two picks. It remains to be seen if these moves will be enough to save Mayhew's job, but the Lions have more than enough talent to finish better than 4-12.
