Ryan Williams injury: Cardinals RB expected to return soon

Williams canceled a second opinion on his knee and should be back at Cardinals practice on Thursday.

Arizona Cardinals running back Ryan Williams will be back to practice sometime this week, according to Darren Urban. He opted not to get a second opinion on his knee and hopes to start practicing again on Thursday.

Williams tweaked his knee on Sunday, but an MRI revealed no damage. The MRI was more of a precaution, as it was the same knee in which he tore a patellar tendon in 2011, wiping out his rookie season. Williams only played five games in 2012 before a shoulder injury ended his season again. Over two seasons, he has managed just 58 carries for 164 yards and zero touchdowns.

The Cardinals' new coaching staff still believes Williams can contribute to the team, but he has a crowded backfield to contend with. In addition to free-agent addition Rashard Mendenhall, he'll also be fighting off rookies like Andre Ellington and Stepfan Taylor. It is crucial that he stays healthy and stands out in both training camp and preseason.
