Jets ‘losing confidence’ Santonio Holmes will be ready for Week 1

Santonio Holmes continues to rehab his foot injury, but a return before the season opener is looking less likely by the day.

Already lacking threats at the skill positions, the New York Jets are reportedly "losing confidence" wide receiver Santonio Holmes will return to the field for the start of the season, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.

Holmes continues to rehab the Lisfranc injury, which caused him to miss 12 games last season. He opened training camp on the active/PUP list, but there isn’t a timetable for his return. When asked if he would play at all this season, Holmes said he was unable to give an answer, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Considering how slow Holmes’ progress has been in his rehabilitation, it wouldn’t be a major surprise to see him miss the start of the regular season. The Jets may have been hopeful their No. 1 receiver would be back on the field sooner rather than later, but that doesn’t look like it will be the case. If Holmes isn’t activated by the time the team makes the second round of cuts, he will remain on the PUP list for at least the first six games of the regular season.
