Ryan Lilja offered contract by Denver Broncos

The Chiefs were unable to lure the veteran center out of retirement, but perhaps a chance to reunite with Peyton Manning could do the trick for Denver.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The Denver Broncos are trying to reunite Peyton Manning and Ryan Lilja, having offered the veteran guard and center a contract to compete for the right to snap footballs to Manning this season. Lilja, 31, retired after the 2012 season and told the Kansas City Chiefs that he was not interested in returning.

But perhaps a chance to play with Manning again could bring him back.

Lilja was a guard for the Indianapolis Colts from 2004 to 2009 before being released and signing a free-agent deal with the Chiefs. He was the primary center for 2-14 Kansas City last year, his original team after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2004. The Colts claimed him off of waivers that year and he made 59 starts blocking for Manning and the rest of the offense, winning the Super Bowl in 2006 and then signing a $20 million contract with Indy in 2008.

Thus far, Lilja has been adamant that he wants to stay retired, but perhaps the opportunity to potentially win another Super Bowl with Manning could bring him back.
