NFL news roundup: Justin Blackmon surgery, Michael Bush injury

Michael Bush and Justin Blackmon highlight Friday’s news.

USA TODAY Sports

As training camp slowly approaches, the NFL news continues to trickle out slowly each day. WIth a frenzy of free agent activity in both the NBA and NHL, football has taken a backseat in the world of sports news.

But there are still a few noteworthy items to touch on heading into the weekend. Here are the headlines in the NFL for Friday, July 5.

Justin Blackmon injury: Jaguars WR had groin surgery recently

Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union has reported that Justin Blackmon recently underwent groin surgery. Blackmon was held out of a few practices during minicamp with the groin issue and apparently needed surgery to fix it. The second-year wide receiver is suspended for the first four weeks of the season, but his presence in training camp is important with a new offense being installed. He is expected back by the start of training camp. Curiously, Blackmon is now the third Jaguar to have groin surgery this offseason, joining Jason Babin and Jordan Rodgers.

Michael Bush injury: Bears RB played with broken shoulder bone in 2012

Michael Bush is well known as a tough running back, combining his size and quick feet in his running style which makes him difficult to bring down. Those traits made the Bears sign Bush to a four-year contract prior to the 2012 season, but he was only able to rush for just over 400 yards and five touchdowns. He ended the season on injured reserve with a rib injury, but according to the Chicago Tribune, Bush was also playing with a broken shoulder bone. Perhaps a healthy season will help him bounce back in 2013.
