NFL news roundup: LaVon Brazill suspended for marijuana, Reshad Jones wants to get even better

Here are some NFL headlines you may have missed from Sunday.

Mike DiNovo-US PRESSWIRE

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver LaVon Brazill was suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Recently, it came out that he was suspended for a second positive marijuana test. It's another unwelcome distraction in the Colts' offseason after safety Joe Lefeged was arrested for weapons charges.

Here are some other headlines from around the SB Nation network:

Dolphins’ Reshad Jones: ‘I can only get better’

Miami Dolphins safety Reshad Jones enjoyed a breakout year in 2012, and he believes the best is yet to come. Speaking on the Dolphins' radio show, Jones wants to be recognized as one of the best safeties in the league:

“I can only get better. I got the ball rolling in the right direction and I just told myself I want to be recognized as one of the premier safeties in this league. I think last year I went out and showed that to the world and I just want to keep it going.”

Jones recorded 94 tackles, four interceptions, one sack and two forced fumbles while starting all 16 games last year.

Could Melvin Ingram play in 2013?

San Diego Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram tore his ACL on May 14. Many people assumed he would miss the regular season, and the Chargers seemed to agree, moving quickly to sign Dwight Freeney four days later. However, Chargers blog Bolts From The Blue thinks there's still an outside chance Ingram can play in 2013. He invokes Baltimore's Terrell Suggs. Suggs tore his Achilles on May 3, and would return to the Ravens in late October.

Ingram obviously has a longer road to recovery due to the nature of the two injuries, but with the way sports medicine has progressed in recent years, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Casey Hayward aims to be more of a playmaker

Green Bay Packers cornerback Casey Hayward had a strong rookie year, leading the team in both interceptions and passes defended. Now in his second year, Hayward looks to improve on his numbers. Cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. compared him to former Packer Charles Woodson:

This guy has a skill set that is very similar to Woodson, and that’s rare. He can smell routes, see things, and do things that not many people can do. Now, what he has to learn how to do is catch the flash of the ball. That’s one thing ‘Wood’ can do better than anybody, and Casey needs to continue to improve on that.

The Packers let Woodson walk in free agency, believing that Hayward is capable of filling his shoes. Packers blog Acme Packing Company thinks he can come close to double-digit interceptions:

I expect him to be more of a playmaker this fall, and finish with something along the lines of 70 tackles, 20 pass breakups, nine interceptions, and four forced fumbles. I'm not sure he'll reach double digit picks (something that hasn't been done since Antonio Cromartie in 2007), but I think he'll come close.

Markus Kuhn’s roster spot in jeopardy?

New York Giants defensive end Markus Kuhn is entering his second year. He moved up the depth chart last year and was a useful part of the defensive rotation before a torn ACL ended his season in Week 10. Kuhn didn't participate in OTAs or minicamps, and will likely open training camp on the PUP. Now, with the Giants drafting Johnathan Hankins and adding free agents Cullen Jenkins, Mike Patterson and Frank Okam, he has an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster.

Giants blog Big Blue View believes that the Giants may stash him on the PUP to open the season and call him up midseason as an injury replacement.
