Victor Cruz, Giants ‘very close’ on extension

Victor Cruz and the Giants could announce an extension as early as Monday.

Victor Cruz and the New York Giants are very close to coming to an agreement, and a long-term deal could be announced as early as Monday, a source told Pro Football Talk. Cruz was a restricted free agent before signing a $2.87 million tender in June, and has reportedly been asking for a salary of roughly $9 million per season. The Giants have been hesitant to budge from an offer that comes out to about $8 million per season.

There is no word yet on what the current offer looks like, nor whether it was Cruz or the Giants who ultimately compromised to remove the stalemate. According to PFT’s Mike Florio, the deal could be worth $8.5 million per season, which would split the difference evenly.

The negotiations appeared to be amicable throughout this offseason, with both sides agreeing that Cruz should be in New York. The two sides were expected to get a deal done at some point before training camp. That they perhaps are ready to announce an agreement this week should reduce distraction as the team prepares for the 2013 season.
