Broncos, Matt Russell release statements following arrest

Following his arrest over the weekend, the Broncos and their director of player personnel released statements on Monday.

USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell issued a statement on Monday regarding his arrest this past Saturday. According to the report, Russell allegedly hit a car while driving and then later hit a police vehicle.

Russell was arrested and is facing multiple charges, including careless driving resulting in injury and driving under the influence after police found an open alcohol container in Russell’s car. He spent one night in jail before posting bond and being released on Sunday.

Below is the complete statement from Russell, via the Broncos’ official website:

"I deeply regret the poor judgment I demonstrated that resulted in my arrest over the weekend. I apologize to the Denver Broncos, our fans and the National Football League for this inexcusable mistake. I'm ashamed that I represented this region and the Broncos organization in the manner that I did. I take complete responsibility for my actions and will be fully accountable. Going forward, I will take steps to ensure this never happens again."

The Broncos organization released a statement of their own on Monday as well.

”Our organization is extremely disappointed and concerned with the incident involving Matt Russell. We immediately expressed our disappointment to Matt, and he is fully aware of the seriousness of this situation. This type of behavior is unacceptable and very troubling. We expect better from all employees, particularly those in leadership positions. These allegations completely contradict the values and beliefs of the Broncos regarding social responsibility.

“We are continuing to gather information and will handle this matter appropriately and in accordance with all NFL policies.”

The officer in the police vehicle was hospitalized with what was described as “minor injuries,” according to the report, and he’s already been released from the hospital. Police arrested Russell at the scene, though the report states that the Colorado State Patrol declined to release any blood alcohol results.
