Ravens rookie Matt Elam will negotiate own contract

Matt Elam is not hiring an agent and plans on negotiating his own rookie contract with the Ravens before training camp starts.

USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Ravens rookie safety Matt Elam will not be hiring an agent and plans on representing himself in negotiations, according to the Baltimore Sun.

A source told the Sun that this should not hinder his efforts to get his rookie contract signed, and the deal should be done before training camp opens in late July. The first-round pick is being advised by his older brother, veteran safety Abram Elam.

The CBA does not require players to have an agent to negotiate an NFL contract. Recently, San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith represented himself when he signed a two-year extension in June.

Elam was drafted by the Ravens with the 32nd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. The new slotting system effectively takes the guesswork out of rookie negotiations, as he is expected to sign a four-year deal worth $6.767 million, with a $3.301 million signing bonus.

Elam had 176 tackles and six interceptions in three years with the Florida Gators.
