Lions, Matt Stafford near ‘blockbuster extension’, per report

The Lions are on the verge of signing a massive extension with Matthew Stafford that will run through the 2017 season. It is reportedly worth $75 million over five years.

The Detroit Lions are close to signing a huge contract extension with quarterback Matthew Stafford, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal will reportedly run through through the 2017 season and is worth around $75 million over five years, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Stafford’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2014 season. The 25-year-old was one of the last No. 1 picks to be drafted under the old rookie wage system, signing a six-year deal worth $72 million in his rookie year. According to ESPN’s Chris Sprow, the Lions would be taking a big cap hit over the next two years with his current contract, paying out $20.8 million in 2013 and $19.3 million in 2014.

Pride of Detroit: Lions fans react

After two injury-riddled years, Stafford started every game in 2011 and 2012. He threw for over 5,000 yards in 2011 and came close to doing it again last year, throwing for 4,967 yards and setting the all-time record for passing attempts in a season with 727.
