Josh Johnson expected to win Bengals backup QB job

The Bengals’ backup quarterback battle looks like a runaway as Josh Johnson has grabbed a hold of the spot.

USA TODAY Sports

It appears as if Josh Johnson will be the Cincinnati Bengals' backup quarterback in 2013. The 27-year-old has impressed in minicamps and Geoff Hobson makes it sound like it would take a major collapse from Johnson for him to lose the job.

Isn’t it looking like the backup job is Josh Johnson’s to lose? He’s the crop’s best runner, he can throw it deep, and he knows the system.

It’s not just that Johnson has the tools and know-how either. He also lacks competition.

John Skelton is on the Bengals' roster, but he has had trouble adjusting to the offense and Zac Robinson missed part of the spring with a sore arm. With neither pushing Johnson, it is tough to imagine him losing out on the backup spot.

Johnson will have even more responsibility as the Bengals' No. 2 because they don't normally carry three quarterbacks. If he wins the backup job, the 53-man roster will likely feature him and Andy Dalton as the only quarterbacks on the roster, with Mohamed Sanu serving as the emergency quarterback.

Johnson hasn't played in the NFL since 2011. He had a nice start in place of the injured Josh Freeman that year, completing 16 of 27 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and an interception, but he only attempted two passes the following week as Freeman returned and he hasn't played since. He signed with the 49ers and Browns last year, but never saw the field.
