Riley Cooper will receive outside assistance, Eagles announce

The fourth-year receiver has already apologized for a racial slur used in a video that went viral on Wednesday, but the team also announced how it plans to move forward.

The Philadelphia Eagles are taking their own actions to discipline wide receiver Riley Cooper for a racial slur he used in a video that went viral on Wednesday. The team's statement was released Thursday, with Albert Breer relaying the information on Twitter:

“In meeting with Riley yesterday, we decided together that his next step will be to seek outside assistance to help him fully understand the impact of his words and actions. He needs to reflect. As an organization, we will provide the resources he needs to do so.”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Thursday that the league will not punish Cooper, since the team has already taken matters into its own hands. Teammate Michael Vick also said that he and the rest of the team have already forgiven Cooper for his words.

Breer also noted that Cooper was on the field and practicing with teammates as normal on Thursday.

The team will be looking for a big season from Cooper after losing wide receiver Jeremy Maclin for the year. Cooper will be entering his fourth NFL season, having caught 46 passes for 679 yards and five touchdowns in his career.
