Dolphins vs. Jaguars: Blaine Gabbert mediocre in loss

In the least publicized quarterback battle, Blaine Gabbert lost ground to Chad Henne.

Mike Ehrmann

In a battle of brutal uniforms, the Miami Dolphins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-3 on Friday night at EverBank Field.

The Dolphins evened their record at 1-1 after losing the Hall of Fame Game to the Dallas Cowboys, while Jacksonville dropped its opener. Much more disturbing for Jacksonville is the quarterback competition.

Blaine Gabbert, the third-year man and former first-round pick, only completed 5-of-10 passes for 19 yards and threw one interception. Granted, the team was without Maurice Jones-Drew, Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts, but ugly is ugly.

Alfie Crow of Big Cat Country discussed his thoughts on the affair, mostly Gabbert’s future:

After a live first impression, I thought Gabbert was pretty awful even excluding the interception that wasn’t his fault. Going back and re-watching the game this morning however, I didn’t really think he was all that bad.

Mr. Crow also feels Henne wasn’t lighting up the world either, although played respectably:

Chad Henne was kind of the same. My initial impression after live watching the game was he was pretty meh, doing the same types of things Gabbert did with short, quick throws.

Over at the Phinsider, Kevin Nogle felt very good about both sides of the ball. The first teams looked especially good against Miami’s cross-state rival.

During the first half, the Dolphins looked good, with the first team able to move the ball. Starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill went 5-for-9 for 75 yards and a touchdown on the night. He also had one run for two yards. The first team held on to the ball much better this week, after fumbling away their first possession last week.

The defense, meanwhile, came away with an interception off starting Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert. In what proved to be his last pass, Gabbert say the ball bounce off a Jacksonville receiver and into the waiting arms of Miami cornerback Nolan Carroll.
