Giants vs. Steelers: DE Damontre Moore impresses Giants fans in first on-field action

The rookie from Texas A&M was impressive in his debut Saturday.

Jason Bridge-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants won their preseason opener Saturday, an 18-13 win on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. These games serve many purposes, though none may be as important as seeing how rookies fare in the NFL when forced to pick on players their own size.

Rookie defensive end Damontre Moore was one of the highlights Saturday for the Giants, Ed Valentine of Big Blue View wrote afterward. Moore, a third-round pick from Texas A&M, blocked a punt and made four tackles, including one tackle for loss.

From Big Blue View:

“I’m pretty pleased,” Moore said of his overall effort. “We’ll see when we get in there and watch film how good it was or how bad it was.”

Head coach Tom Coughlin was also happy with Moore’s play.

“Moore obviously was a problem for Pittsburgh from a pass rush standpoint,” Coughlin said. “He keeps coming and he likes it and he had a punt block, which was nice.”

The Giants drafted Moore hoping he would eventually join the organization’s legion of great defensive ends. It is way too early to say that will happen, but the 20-year-old is off to a good start.

Both Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul missed Saturday's game with injuries, so it was a larger opportunity than usual for Moore to show what he could do, even for a preseason game. It seems, at least in the eyes of Big Blue View, that he validated the hype cultivated early at training camp, and then some.

The Giants' next preseason game is Aug. 18 against the Indianapolis Colts. The game will air at 7 p.m. ET on Fox.
