NFL roundup: Geno Smith, Trent Richardson return to practice

We’ve got Geno Smith injury news, Trent Richardson injury news, and, well, some more injury news. Here are the big headlines making rounds on Sunday.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is practicing on Sunday despite suffering a sprained ankle in Friday's preseason game. He says that he doesn't expect to miss any preseason games, although reporters in attendance noted that he was noticeably limping and doesn't look ready to play. Smith is trying to win the starting job over Mark Sanchez.

Here are other NFL headlines you may have missed from Sunday:

Trent Richardson injury: Browns RB returns to practice

Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson returned to practice on Sunday after missing the preseason opener with a shin injury. He's still coming along slowly, but the Browns hope he will be able to play in this week's preseason game against the Lions. Richardson has taken a lot of nicks in his young NFL career, but he still played in 15 games last season. He should be all systems go for Week 1.

Sharrif Floyd injury: Vikings DT undergoing MRI on knee

Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd will undergo an MRI on his left knee. The rookie went down on a cut block in Friday's preseason game, and the knee is reportedly feeling more sore on Sunday than it was on Saturday. The Vikings don't think the injury is too serious, but they are being understandably cautious with their first-round pick.

Santonio Holmes injury: Some feel Jets WR ‘milking’ foot issue

It wouldn't be a news roundup post without some Jets drama. This week's subject is wide receiver Santonio Holmes, currently recovering from a Lisfranc injury. Some in the Jets camp believe Holmes is milking the injury, taking his time to come back in what's essentially a contract year. Holmes has a $10.75 million cap hit for the 2014 season, so the speculation is that he's not rushing back. The Jets don't expect him to be ready for the regular season opener.

Dallas Clark intends to play in 2013, deal is close

Free agent tight end Dallas Clark is still looking for a team, and ESPN's Adam Schefter says that he may be close to signing a contract. It's unknown what team he's close to signing with, though. The 34-year-old was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after recording 47 receptions for 435 yards and four touchdowns last season. Schefter believes that he has enough in the tank and could land with a new team as soon as this week.
