Dallas Cowboys extend contract to Brian Waters

Dallas desperately wants guard depth and is now reaching out to Waters.

The Dallas Cowboys have made an offer to free agent guard Brian Waters and now wait to hear back from the man, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas.

Waters, 36, didn’t play last season but never officially retired. The six-time Pro Bowler could join Dallas and immediately boost the depth of the offensive line, something which has long been an issue with the Cowboys. Last week, Dallas signed Brandon Moore to a one-year deal, only to have him change his mind right before getting on the plane and remain retired.

Currently, the Cowboys have Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau starting at their guard spots. Livings is coming off knee surgery and could miss the beginning of the regular season while Bernadeau has missed most of the offseason activities and part of training camp with a variety of injuries.

Backup guard Ronald Leary is also in the mix to start, should head coach Jason Garrett get impatient, according to ESPN.com.

Waters spent the bulk of his 13-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he made five Pro Bowls and was named a first-team All-Pro twice in 2004 and 2005 on one of the greatest lines of all-time with Hall of Famer Willie Roaf and Will Shields, another likely Canton-bound man.

Oddly enough, Waters entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and was signed by the Cowboys in 1999 before being cut during training camp. Probably not the best decision the organization ever made.
