Bills vs. Colts, NFL preseason: Jeff Tuel shines in victory

Buffalo and its rookie quarterback played well in a preseason win.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Bills got their first preseason win of the year on Sunday, beating the host Indianapolis Colts, 44-20.

Of course, the biggest storyline to watch going into the game was quarterback E.J. Manuel, who was making his NFL debut after being drafted in the first round, the only signal-caller to enjoy that distinction this year.

Manuel had a very solid day, throwing for 107 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-21 passing.

Over at Buffalo Rumblings, Brian Galliford decided not to talk about Manuel, but instead focused on some of the other performances from the victory. In fact, Galliford writes about another quarterback, Jeff Tuel, that impressed the masses.

As an undrafted quarterback, you can’t script a better NFL debut (19-23, 212 yards, two scores), no matter the level of competition. There have been strong indications this offseason that the Bills would prefer to keep two quarterbacks on the active roster, but if they want to keep Tuel around, they may have to stash him on the back end of the 53.

Galliford also wrote about someone who didn't have such a good outing, namely defensive tackle Alan Branch:

One of Buffalo's more notable free agent additions this offseason, Branch seems to be stuck somewhere between the second and third units in Buffalo's defensive line rotation. He does not appear to be as explosive off the snap nor as athletic as many of the players competing alongside him, and may be on the verge of falling behind players like Torell Troup and Corbin Bryant. It would not be shocking at this point if Branch doesn't make the team.

With a new head coach in Doug Marrone, the Bills are trying to make the playoffs for the first time since the 1999 season, when the Music City Miracle ruined dreams. It is currently the longest drought for any team in the league.
