NFL rumors: Bart Scott expected to sign this week

Bart Scott will be playing in the NFL this season, according to reports. Where he will be playing will be determined this week.

Bart Scott is expected to sign with a new NFL team this week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The veteran linebacker was released by the New York Jets in February, likely due to sagging production and a relatively hefty $6.9 million due to him this season.

Scott reportedly has interest from several teams, though Schefter did not mention any names on the list of suitors. A few teams may have openings at inside linebacker that did not exist before the start of training camp. The Philadelphia Eagles, for example, lost Jason Phillips for the season due to a torn ACL, and have yet to make a corresponding move for depth. The San Francisco 49ers could also be an interested party, as they look to replace Darius Fleming, who also suffered a torn ACL.

Scott was considered one of the Jets' biggest defensive leaders last season. At the outset of training camp, linebacker David Harris singled out Scott as one of the players he will miss the most from last year's defense, according to The Jet Press. Scott's production had declined in recent years, however. He recored 60 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interceptions in 15 games played last season.

Rumors surfaced in February that Scott would be willing to return to the Jets on a reduced salary. Another season in New York has not yet explicitly been ruled out. Currently, 2012 third-round pick Demario Davis is slated to start next to Harris.
