Bernard Pierce injury: Ravens RB returns to practice

Bernard Pierce returned to practice Monday after leaving the Ravens’ preseason opener with a knee sprain.

Mitch Stringer-US PRESSWIRE

Bernard Pierce returned to practice for the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. Pierce left Friday's preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a knee sprain after finding the end zone on a 20-yard run.

Pierce is expected to take on an expanded role in the Ravens' offense this season after notching 108 carries for 532 yards and one touchdown during the 2012 regular season. The Ravens have been lining Ray Rice up at wide receiver at times during training camp due to the team's lack of intermediate receiving options with Dennis Pitta out for the season and Ed Dickson currently dealing with a hamstring issue. With Rice out wide, Pierce has been getting more snaps at running back.

With Pierce back at practice, he will likely be expected to play during the Ravens' second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday. The Ravens beat the Bucs, 44-16, in their preseason opener. Pierce is entering his second season in the NFL. He was drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Temple.
