Robert Griffin III won’t play in Redskins preseason, says Mike Shanahan

The Redskins quarterback has his sights set on Week 1 of the regular season, but will not play before.

The Washington Redskins are taking no risks with their franchise quarterback, as head coach Mike Shanahan announced that Robert Griffin III will not play in the Washington Redskins' three remaining preseason games.

Shanahan is taking the advice of Dr. James Andrews, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network. Andrews repaired RGIII’s torn ACL this offseason, and was monitoring the quarterback’s rehabilitation. It was his advice to the organization that Griffin III not participate.

Washington's coach was widely criticized for his handling of the rookie quarterback during the playoffs. He elected to keep Griffin III in Washington's playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks, rather than remove him when he began limping early in the game. Unlike that situation, however, it appears that Shanahan is not willing to take any more risks with the Redskins' franchise quarterback.

Griffin III will take his first snaps on Wednesday, as the team runs 11-on-11 drills in training camp. Up to this point he has been running position drills and installing the offense -- but had not seen any live snaps against the Washington defense.

The following was posted to RGIII’s official Twitter account on Monday afternoon, though there’s no indication it directly relates to the decision to keep him out of preseason.
