Andrew Hawkins injury: Bengals WR wants to avoid ankle surgery

Andrew Hawkins is still walking on crutches, but he doesn’t plan to have surgery and hopes to play in 2013.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Andrew Hawkins is still in a cast and walking on crutches, but he says that he won’t need surgery on his injured ankle and expects to play in the 2013 season. There is still no timetable for his return, although head coach Marvin Lewis suggests that he will start the season on injured reserve with the “designated to return” tag. Under that tag, Hawkins won’t be eligible to return until after Week 8.

Hawkins injured his ankle on Aug.1 in a freak accident with cornerback Brandon Ghee. Hawking made a diving catch during 11-on-11 drills when Ghee stepped on his ankle. His foot will remain in a cast for about 10 more days and he will likely miss the rest of preseason.

Hawkins recorded 51 catches for 533 yards and four touchdowns last season while playing in the slot position. Brandon Tate and Marvin Jones might be competing for that spot while Hawkins recovers, with Mohamed Sanu assuming the No. 2 position opposite A.J. Green.
