Darrelle Revis injury: Buccaneers CB could play preseason games

Revis is ahead of schedule with his recovery and could return to action for a preseason game.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have remained optimistic throughout the offseason that cornerback Darrelle Revis will be available when the team kicks off for Week 1 of the regular season, but he could be ready to join the team even sooner than that. ESPN's Sal Paolantonio said on Sportscenter that Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominick is considering playing the four-time Pro Bowler in the team's third preseason game.

On Tuesday, Sander Philipse of Bucs Nation reacted to the news of the potential, upcoming return of Revis:

If Revis does play in Week 3, he may be unlikely to take snaps during Week 4 of the preseason, when starters are generally held out and backups and third-stringers are given the chance to stand out and earn a roster spot.

The Bucs have been forced to practice and scheme without Revis, and it will be interesting to see how the Buccaneers use the shutdown cornerback worth $16 million per year in their scheme.

Revis, 28, suffered a torn ACL in his left knee early in the 2012 season that proved to be his last with the New York Jets. In April, Revis was traded to the Buccaneers for a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and a conditional draft pick in 2014.

The three-time All-Pro participated in live 7-on-7 drills with the team for the first time on Monday and is said to be ahead of the scheduled recovery timetable.
