A year after he started all 16 games at left tackle for the Chicago Bears, J'Marcus Webb is now running with the second team and the demotion may be permanent, according to Michael C. Wright of ESPNChicago.com.

Webb lost the starting left tackle job when Chicago signed Jermon Bushrod in free agency, but he was expected to shift across the line and start at right tackle this season. Now, just one game into the preseason, Webb is working with the backups and rookie fifth-round pick Jordan Mills is starting in his place at right tackle. The reason for the demotion appears to be consistency.
“I think we’ve been very clear with J’Marcus about what we’re doing,” Bears coach Marc Trestman said, via ESPN. “I said it last week that there’s been an up and down performance level by J’Marcus, but we were still going to do this. We were still going to give work to the other guys, and see what they could do as well. So we’ll evaluate it.”
Webb worked with the second team on Monday and Tuesday and could be on the roster bubble if he doesn’t regain the starting right tackle job. Bears offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said Webb will need to be versatile if he’s going to be one of the eight offensive linemen on the 53-man roster.
If Bushrod, Mills, Roberto Garza, Matt Slauson and first-round pick Kyle Long are locks to make the roster, that leaves Webb competing for one of three spots. In addition to Webb, James Brown, Eben Britton, Jonathan Scott and Edwin Williams are among the players competing for a spot on the active roster.
