Louis Delmas not expected to play during preseason

The Lions’ veteran safety reportedly won’t be seeing the field until the games count in September.

USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Lions safety Louis Delmas will likely be sidelined until the regular season starts, according to the Detroit News.

Delmas has had a bevy of injuries in the past and is currently dealing with tendinitis in his surgically repaired left knee, a problem which has been recurring since last year. After skipping the Lions' first preseason game against the New York Jets to rest, Delmas says there's a good chance he won't test anything before he has to, according to the report:

"Is it important for me to get out there? Yes," Delmas said Tuesday. "Is it wise to? Right now I don't think so. But I am doing everything I can to prepare myself mentally and physically to be ready for the season.

This type of schedule is nothing new for Delmas considering he also skipped the entire preseason last year before being ready to go when Detroit took on the Philadelphia Eagles in the first week of the regular season. Head coach Jim Schwartz has also limited Delmas significantly in practice, only permitting him to practice on consecutive days once during camp this season.

Delmas has only played in 19 regular season games in the past two years. The Lions think enough of him when he’s on the field to have recently re-signed the veteran on a two-year deal, however, so he’s obviously doing something right.
