Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith share 1st team quarterback reps at Jets practice

Geno Smith received his turn to take first-team snaps on Wednesday after backing up Mark Sanchez under center for the first two practices of the week.

USA TODAY Sports

After watching Mark Sanchez get the first team reps for two days, rookie quarterback Geno Smith is back under center with the starters, according to Rich Cimini.

Smith rolled his ankle in the New York Jets first preseason game against the Detroit Lions, but he's still embroiled in a full-blown battle for the starting job with Sanchez. Head coach Rex Ryan has yet to make the announcement with which player will start this Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars at MetLife Stadium.

Smith was solid in his debut last weekend, completing five of his six passes before going down with his aforementioned ankle injury.

Sanchez was mediocre at best, however, tossing a horrendous interception to rookie defensive lineman Ziggy Ansah that was returned for a touchdown on New York's first offensive possession. Sanchez rebounded to throw a touchdown to Jeff Cumberland, but only after lofting another would-be interception -- thought that one was dropped.
