Colts view Ahmad Bradshaw as ‘every-down back’

Colts coach Chuck Pagano thinks Ahmad Bradshaw can be an every-down back due to his pass protection skills.

The Indianapolis Colts plan on making running back Ahmad Bradshaw the feature back once he's ready to practice, with Vick Ballard serving as the backup. Head coach Chuck Pagano envisions Bradshaw as a back who can play all three downs due to his skills in pass protection.

Bradshaw started training camp on the active/PUP list after offseason foot surgery, but the Colts were forced to activate him after he participated in a walk-through on Aug. 4, violating the CBA. Bradshaw is still working his way back and won’t play this weekend’s preseason game, but Pagano thinks he will be ready to handle the load. From ESPN.com:

“It’ll be great to get him out there,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said about Bradshaw. “He’s an every-down back. I know he can be a third-down back. I know he can be a pass protector. He hasn’t played in a while. It’ll take him a minute obviously to knock the rust off, but it’s going to be great to have him in the fold and join those other guys and starting competing with those guys.”

Bradshaw was slowed by foot injuries last season, but he managed to play in 14 games and rushed for 1,015 yards on 4.6 yards per carry. Ballard led the Colts with 814 rushing yards in 2012 but had just 3.9 yards per carry. He is expected to serve as a change-of-pace back behind Bradshaw in his second season.
